A local Canmore resident by the name of Annie Beals is a four time national champion in a very unexpected sport, arm wrestling.

The 2019 Canadian National Armwrestling Championship was held in Edmonton, Alberta on July 12 to 14. Beals took the gold medal in four categories Women’s Left 60, Women’s Left 70, Women’s Right 60 and Women’s Right 70. These categories represented the weight category she fell in and the weight category above her.

Beals says that she has only been in the sport for three years now, and she started competing on a whim.

“There was a tournament going on in my local town at the time, where I was living in Northern Alberta, and [my friend’s] family had been into the sport for many years. His dad was a multiple time national champion, so he had grown up in the sport. My friend suggested that I would probably be quite good at it, so I entered.”

During that first tournament Beals says she took second place and even won a match against a professional arm wrestler. After this introduction into the sport, Beals was hooked.

Before her friend introduced her to the tournament, she says that she knew nothing about the sport.

“I didn’t even really know that it existed as an actual sport.”

Since then, Beals has taken every opportunity to further herself in the sport and perfect her craft. She trains with different clubs in British Columbia and Alberta multiple times a week, and competes on a national, provincial and local level.

Her next step is competing at a global scale at the World Armwrestling Championships.

“If you finish top two in your national event, you qualify for the world championships.”

This competition is known as the main arm wrestling championship in the World and will be held in Romania this year. Beals the competition includes competitors from Eastern Europe, a place where the sport is much higher in popularity.

“This will be my first time going to the World Championships,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people in arm wrestling that I have never competed against before.”

In preparation for her trip to Romania, Beals says that she will be doing lots of training and looking for sponsors to help her with the costs of going to compete.
