The Last of Us is based on the video game series and the plot — “the engrossing tale of the post-apocalypse centred on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be a key to a cure for the deadly pandemic,” according to Production Weekly — will take notes from the video games, but is expected to deviate.

The big budget HBO series will star Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Pedro Pascal as Joel; both are veterans of the HBO hit show Game of Thrones.

Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is listed as the show’s writer-producer with Neil Druckmann, who wrote and was the creative director of the video games.
