Hospitality, healing at Canada’s only residential school resort
As my husband and I pulled up in front of the beautifully landscaped gardens and ivy-covered stone facade of the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino near Cranbrook, I had one thought — it looks nice. Really nice. At first glance, St. Eugene looks like any other carefully renovated historic property, but its history is unlike any other hotel in the world.
Olsen: Lights Out at Baker Creek Mountain Resort
I have always wondered what it would be like to step back in time and live the life of an early pioneer in a log cabin on the Canadian frontier. No cellphone. No WiFi. No TV. And no updates about pandemics or U.S. politics – two things I’ve had quite enough of lately – thank you very much. Retreating to a cabin in a remote corner of the woods seems like a good idea in the midst of a pandemic, but giving up modern conveniences like electricity and indoor plumbing would be challenging – for me anyway.
